Does anyone have too many chickens?

Never too many chickens here!!...Just not enough housing!!....

Well, you know how much the ladies like little fuzzy wuzzy chicks; maybe once you start hatching them out, your DW might just want to do just that! Then you can officially join the "Too Many Chickens but Really Don't Care" club!

Please tell your DH..........that if all of them turned out to be as nice and gentle as the black silkie(Fred) I got off of you..........I'd buy all you could hatch! He is so gentle, had him out the other day and he sat on the back of an outdoor chair and watched the kids jump on the trampoline........He also got nose to nose with one of the dogs, checking him out. He's great and doing very well. Jeff

Yes, and I want more!

We'll be culling 5 roosters soon, then I can get my flocks separated the way I want them.

Last count (standards and bantam) I had over 40. The weekend before Thanksgiving my broody barred rock (she hid her nest in the woods) hatched out 11 chicks!

Thank you! I was wondering how Fred was doing. I do miss the little guy... But it sounds like has a happy place to live, and it made DH happy to 'thin the flock'.

Fred was raised around dogs and cats. He was out only when we were watching over them, but we live a nice animal neighborhood. So it doesn't surprise me that he's checking out new critters!

My DH said I could start with 3, I started with 6 and went up to twelve, but lost a few and went down to nine, until yesterday when we went back up to 11 with Tiramisu and Butterscotch. He quit talking to me when we got to 8. Hmmmm, wonder why we're separated. If it were up to me and not my pocketbook, I would have oodles and oodles.

Some famous coach once said, "I never lost a game, I only ran out of time!" Well..... I don't have too many chickens, I have too few coops.

Yep, I thought I'd start small with maybe 8 or so chickens, but had to order the required 15 chics. I ordered instead of getting them at TSC this spring so I could get just pullets. I thought my husband's uncle or cousin might want to take the extra ones off our hands. The hatchery actually shipped 16 and they all lived! Well, the Uncle or Cousin didn't step up to the plate to take any. My vet knew an older couple that could take a few off my hands and people at the TSC were always looking for a few more, but the more I cared for them the more I was attached, so I kept them all.

I am soooooooooooooo glad. I love them all so very much!
Egg production is slowing down. I would love the experience of hatching some. I'd even be happy if just one went broody. I think it would be a neat experience. I would love to add to the flock this spring, but like everyone else..........need more housing. I have 15 pullets and 1 surprise roo. Right now this number is very manageable.......so I think I'm ready for a challenge.

Kudos to you for being man enough to appreciate (and not be threatened by) a DW like yours.

There's a couple of men here that could learn a thing or two from you. They know who they are.

Thank you for the kind words, she is a country gal all the way. I was raised in MI and moved to KS after joining the US Army, I met her here and that is the whole story. She has taught me a great deal, has put up with a lot of my mistakes and has shown me that living in the country is far better then the city.
