Does anyone keep ducks in New England

It sounds like you are very well prepared and very used to it!

Oregon also sounds like a very beautiful place to live.

Sorry for the thread hijack

Hi Katharinad,

I used to live in Berlin as a child. My father was in the US Army and we were stationed there for four years back in the early 1970s. Still have friends living there that I email with on occasion. One of these days I really want to go back for a visit as my most fond memories of Christmas are the years we lived in Berlin! Do you go back often?

Now we have really hijacked this thread, but I feel the original poster had an answer to the question that started this thread. So no guilt at this point.

I tell you Berlin is not what it used to be. It has become dirty, unsafe, overrun by east Europeans and Russians, and the Berliner's are not happy any more, since the fall of the Wall. They have turned rather unfriendly. It's good to visit friends once every 10 years, but that is it for me going back. It is a long 13 hour non-stop flight from Portland to Frankfurt. I prefer to keep my good memories about it. I was there when the Wall fell, which was a crazy experience. My husband drove a tour bus on his free time into East Berlin and was chosen to drive Peter Jennings and later Alex Trebeck from Wheel of Fortune. Isn't that cool to have met those people! I wish I could have met them.

When new families were newly stationed in Berlin the co-existing Army families would take them to all the local sights to get them familiar with the area. I remember as a kid our very first visit to The Wall was scary and a little overwhelming especially with those guards up on the walls watching us at Checkpoint Charlie with their huge guns! (My mean older sisters would tell us younger ones to not make mean faces at the guards or they'd shoot us! of course we believed them too

) After about 5 trips to the Wall in one summer we started saying "we have to go to the wall again? whine, whine" question from us every time we had to host new families.

Kids! Sheesh, at least I was old enough to remember all the time we lived there and I'm sorry to hear things have gone down hill so much. It's sad.

(Ok, hijacking of thread done now. I guess we can PM if you/we have anymore Berlin thoughts to share.)

ETA Yeah, it was very cool he got to drive those celebrities around!
