!! Someone is selling some of these in the auction section and they mentioned that the female chicks are brown when hatched. Both of these chicks were brown and very different from all the other chicks' colors at hatching. I've never heard of this breed before so I'll have to go read about them. Also, I see that the NJ's are a small bird and these 2 girls are small--about the same size as my golden campine hen.

Dear GOLDNCHOCOLATE,your birds are very nice but better call them mixed breed.Jaerhorns have yelow legs-yours white. There is chancefor them to be Golden Cuckoo Marans (clean leged) but until you see dark eggs you can not be sure. By the way where you guys see white earlobes?I see light ear feathers but no white earlobes.

As my mind was wandering around this morning

I remembered that if I had hatched any white egg layers then I should have had some WHITE eggs in the incubator....

I'm just going to PM the different people that I have ordered eggs from and see if they can recognize them.

ETA: I think they might be the Golden Cuckoo Marans....here is a link to what they look like:

Wow! Glad I came across your picture! I have a Maran hen that was hatched beside her sister hens that were classified as Black cuckoo Marans, but she looks identical to yours! I've been assuming she is a Golden Cuckoo Maran........so, what's the winning answer! I adore her....she is docile, but soooo smart!!! Definitely the smartest hen in the house!!!!

I am not certain of this. The Marans standard calls for red ears no matter what the coloration of the bird. This is also why they lay brown eggs.

I would say that you absolutely have a mix of some sort. Most likely Creole Old English or Jaerhon with Golden Cuckoo Maran. If the mother was a Maran, she could lay the dark egg, but the offspring could lay a different color (hence the white ears).

Keep us updated as they develop! Either way, they're beautiful birds!
