Does anyone know what this is??

Hi all! I’m reasonably new to chicken keeping! I’ve only got a flock of four.. all hybrids. One of them has something really weird going on with her feathers... I thought it could be moulting but also realise that it’s the wrong time of year as it’s too cold? None of the others are showing symptoms.

It’s almost as if the “fur” on her feather has disappeared, and it’s just the middle stem of the feather that is left. It’s all over her neck area and beneath her top coat of feathers.

I’m booking a vet appoint ASAP but just thought I could look for help on here?

Any advice is great! really worried!

To me they look like normal new feathers growing in and nothing to be worried about.

Or she somehow lost feathers and is regrowing them. A vet visit is unnecessary and would be a waste of money in this situation.

Molting. It typically happens in fall or winter. Don't waste your money on a vet visit. Those are just new feathers coming in where old ones have fallen out.

Welcome to BYC. The others have answered your questions. She is molting, and the shiny blood feathers are what you are noticing. No to the Veterinarian. Save your money.

Yes, those are pin feathers sometimes younger birds will have a partial molt, usually around the neck. Nothing to worry about.
