Does anyone know why my chickens do this after they lay eggs?

That's so funny! :) If I didn't know better, I'd think she was trying to pack a load of hay to build a nest!

Are those Buffs or RIR's. I'm still a novice at chicken breeds, but they look a lot like my Buffs.

:idunnoI'm not exactly sure, but I always thought it was to make a nest. One of mine will even take feathers from my hand and put them behind her.

My chickens do this weird thing where they put hay on their backs after they lay eggs. Does anyone know why they do this?
I have two chickens that do this after they lay an egg. They then call the rooster who comes and escorts them back to the flock. Both girls lay in separate places, one in the coop, and one in a chair on my lanai. I agree that it appears to be a way of camouflaging themselves for the long walk back to the gang. It’s really cute, and funny that none of it stays in place.
