Does anyone own a hog nose snake?

Crunchazoid! Hoggies are awesome! I'm going to the Anaheim show this year!! I'm coming home with snakes, and hopefully some bugs!! You plan on getting one at the show on the 15-16th?

Do they eat mice okay?

I recall reading years ago* that hognoses eat toads and may not take mice too readily.

*years ago, back in the day when snakes were cool. eeew!

The Eastern Hog Nose is a protected species here. Love that "cobra-like" behavior!
We have them living in our woods. I picked up a baby one (to relocate it from the deck to my rock garden) and it promptly flipped onto it's back to "play dead".

Hog nose vipers will not eat mice and only eat toads in the wild. They are not commonly kept in captivity because it is hard to get thier food supply in the winter. They are mildly venomous with bites making you ill. I catch these often in my yard and give them to a university and a nature conservatory as they are difficult to obtain. They are indangered but dont seem to be in my neck of the woods. Until you have tammmed one down to a pet it will play dead and release a nasty foam from it's backend that makes them smell musty and dead. I dont think they would make good pets. I would say ornamental purposes only.

Hoggies are a commonly kept snake. I know they'll eat mice. I've seen my share of pics and I've seen them eating mice. A lot of snakes that don't usually eat rodents in the wild can be taught to. Crunchy, did you ask over at Cornsnakes? I know quite a few people there own them. Good luck!

They're a common pet snake, they eat mice in captivity no problem. Sometimes if you have a problem feeder you can rub it on a toad and make it smell more yummy

From what I've read, anyway!

I'm going to see whats at the show at the Cow Palace this month, but it occurred to me that this time of the year isn't big on babies... So probably most of whats going to be there will be last years rejects

So unless there is some AMAZING yearling, I probably will wait until a better timed show and buy a baby, because I luff baby snakes!
