Does anyone raise quail on the ground?

No, there's no way I'm getting close enough to use a net or any sort of trap that I'd have to watch. These are California quail. I was just wondering if anyone had any particular success with a certain model or style (funnel cone or one-way door, etc.).

Not a bother at all...the way I make a recapture trap is either HC, welded wire, chicken wire, really doesn't matter about the kind of wire as long as they can't pass through the mesh. A rectangle shaped trap works best but I have also used a hurriedly made chicken wire trap that was round, instead of square. A funnel is the best way to make the entrance. Either round or square but round works best. I make the trap 1' wide, 1' high and 3' long. The funnel at one end. If using chicken wire you'll want to make it a little bigger, about 2' x 2' x 4'. Their kinda like a minnow trap but bigger and only 1 funnel.
Someone else asked about this about a year ago, I provided a hand drawn diagram of the trap. You might be able to do a search and find that thread...sorry I can't remember what forum or thread it was on.

Their pretty easy to build if you have 'scrap' wire laying around.

Oh, funnel traps! I've used those on fish.

The basic idea is that you have your trap body, and you have an entrance. The entrance is a funnel that protrudes into the trap, just big enough at the end for the animal you want to go through. A lot of animals have a really hard time finding their way back out, as they go along the walls of the trap but not along the length of the funnel. It works especially well if there's a drop from the funnel end in the trap onto the floor.
