Does anyone raise Silver Spangled Hamburgs?

I used to have a rooster named Mystery that was a Hamburg...would not recommend the breed for a friendly addition to your coop. But the feathers were beautiful. They are for sure a territorial breed, mystery would not let me touch the hens when he was around. He attacked me when I was back at my coop

And I still miss my boy every single day, even though it's been a year. I don't think that behavior is a breed thing as much as it's a roo thing. There are great birds in this breed that are friendly. Fwiw.

Yes....all my breeds that I have hens and roosters act very differently.

Even though mainly my other three roosters don't attack me except one named Oynx (silver laced Wyandotte)

This is my lovely Silver Spangled Hamburg hen, Montana, taken a couple of years ago.

Here she is now.

This is my new one, Dakota, who we just discovered was a rooster. He's just starting to crow.

I absolutely love Hamburgs!

Hamburgs can be flighty but I find that if they are hand raised they are excellent pets. I have six five year old hens who will let you pick her up and eat out of your hand etc whereas the other girls we bought are too flighty for that. Their personalities are very lively and they can't be kept locked in the pen. But overall, they're a beautiful breed, their temperment is one of my favourites

I'm new to chicken ownership and started out with 4 Silver Spangled Hamburgs, inherited from a neighbor. These girls were hatched together and were handled daily when young, so they are quite friendly. However, I can't figure out what they like to eat! They eat their layer pellets just fine, but I also like to give them fresh veggies daily. They turn their noses up at all the regular treat items that most chickens seem to love. I give them the most tender parts of tougher veggies (inner portion of broccoli stems) and I finely chop other items like raw carrots, yellowneck and zucchini squash, etc. They didn't love attacking a head of raw cabbage, as other breeds are said to do. They also tire of things within 2-3 days, so then I have to switch it up. What do your SSHs like to eat?

I just found out, that this is what I have.. My realtor asked me to rescue her, she showed up at their door 5 days ago. I was confused because I kind of thought she was a banty... But now I realize what breed she is... So I guess I wouldn't have your answer.. But she is sweet, but skiddish, my Amercauna's make way more noise screeching around than she does.. Good Luck, don't give up..

Our chickens are nearly six months old now. We have two Dominiques (one just started laying this weekend), two Golden Campines, and two Silver Speckled Hamburgs. The Hamburgs are obnoxious. They cackle loudly all the time, the refuse to be handled and really thrash around when caught, and they're quickly being outgrown by the Campines, who used to be the smallest birds in the flock. I have read (obviously after purchasing them as three day old chicks) that Hamburgs are not a good chicken for beginners, and that they tend to be a fussy breed. Does anyone have experience with these birds? Mainly, I'm wondering if they will ever mellow out. They're also still growing, and I hope they'll put on a bit more weight. It's hard to imagine a very big egg coming out of one of these glorified pigeons. Seriously, they are gorgeous birds, but they drive me a little nuts at times.

This is Portia. Her earlobes are still blue. I've read that they will turn white as she gets a little older.

Portia is on the left, Ellen is on the right. As you can see, they are very beautiful birds. Impossible to catch, but beautiful.
Hello there I also have 3 silver spangled hamburgs I know as chicks they were always very light, its because they are just not big eaters at first It worried me
so I decided to put in a handful of normal chook seed mix and they loved it they prefered that to the chick crumble actually so I gave them both every day. compared to my pekins they are a flighty bird, they do actually fly over fences so if yours aren't that high you may want to raise them slightly. The pullets are a small light bird but somehow they do manage to lay their lovely white medium sized eggs. The yare much like a game bird it is believed they were initially bred by crossing the chickens with a pheasant which explains the flightiness they just don't like being handled and generally wont I mean if you just had one you have the time to spend but on it but when theres lots of chickens its impossible.so in response to your question will they mellow out? I hate to be the bearer of bad news but No they wont mellow out and the noises only get louder so maybe they may not be a good fit for you just like some breeds aren't for me. Good Luck with it all and have Merry Christmas and New Year
