I want to tan a deer hide this hunting season, without having to take it to a taxidermist. Has anyone tanned a hide with good results? What method did you use?

I'm not planning on making clothing with the hide. I may use the hide for beadwork or painting.

I have tanned deer hides but it was a few years ago. I was happy with Van Dykes. I think I used Lutan.

For my first hide I used an oak pallet to dry the hide on after tanning. The chemicals in the hide, nails, and wood reacted and left stains on the hide.
