Does anyone trim their Chickens beaks...........if so WHY?

I just brought a new hen, an Araucana, home today. The top portion of the beak is very long and curved, almost hooked. I handfed her some watermelon which she could get but watched her struggle to pick up feed, etc. I know that chickens are 'debeaked' in large settings oh like KFC hatcheries and so on BUT I have heard of people having to trim a beak for reasons like this. I just would like to know how to do it safely and without hurting her. I think her ability to eat is actually hampered.

You can trim off that hooked end with a regular dog nail clipper.

1. Get someone to hold her securely, and someone else to hold her head so she doesn't jerk around.

2. Slip the nail clipper opening around the hooked end of the beak, and draw it out to the end so the hook "catches" against the clipper.

3. Snip! It's done. If you just snip off the hook part you won't hit any nerves or blood vessels, and she'll have an easier time eating.

Be aware that her beak is naturally like that. You may have to make a habit of clipping the beak now and then.

I trim my Ameracauana's beak, but not to the point it bleeds. She has a crossbeak, and trimming it makes it easier for her to eat.

Nope, it's forever. (Assuming they were done as chicks, which is almost a certainty if "from a chicken farm"). They'll cope ok though.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
