I had a thought and was wondering if there would be any drawbacks to using newspapers that have gone through a paper shredder as bedding. It would be absorbent and could compost when I am done with it. I know I threw it in with my worms when I was composting with red wigglers.

Has anyone else used papers?

I know the ink is probably not the best, but otherwise I have not thought of any other negatives.

I tried it once. It seemed stinkier and much harder to clean up.

We used it when our chickens were just little chicks, stopped because it was just too messy and the birds feet were all turning colors from the ink...Plus when its wet it becomes a nasty paste, yuck.

I use them in the brooder. Easy clean up because they get matted together like a big shag carpet. Just roll it up and trow it away. Not sure that's what I want in the coop. I started using oak wood chips instead of pine shavings there.
