Does anyone use shredded paper in their henhouse? Can it be used, and what are the pros and cons?
Thanks

Many years ago, I used a (brand new at that time) shredded paper product for horse bedding. It was terrific, but either too pricey or only sporadically available, can't remember which. Don't know about it's use for chickens, though, do you have a vet to contact about that?

Paper is an option for bedding AND I have seen it stocked at Lowe's, if not other hardware stores. This is important in case you run out of bedding and have an immediate need. This is a good time to consider options for bedding. IF you have enough room to store, you should stock up on your favorite bedding--pine shavings, straw, hay, paper, etc. ALSO, find out about other suppliers. I would LIKE to say that I have used the same sources for hay, straw, pine shavings, animal feed for the last 24 years I have owned livestock, but things change among suppliers and sometimes you go to buy and they just can't get it for you.

BTW, any kind of bedding stored in plastic will keep in the garage or a dry part of your basement, so don't rule these places out. However, mice also like your bedding--this might be a good plan with BYCer's that have cats that live inside or come inside.

I have not tried the deep litter method yet. For that, of course, you don't need to stock up for winter--YES, I SAID WINTER!!

I do not think that the deep litter method would work with paper. I do LOVE the notion of using recycled paper for bedding, then to use it again to decompose and bed flowers and vegetables.

I used it just used shreaded Newpaper put through paper shreader(dont want my chickens knowing whats going on in the real world).
It didnt absorb as well as wood shavings, and did clump a lot.
