Hello everyone!!!
I just got my batch of 6 EE pullets(they are all 6 days old), and I need help with 2 things...
1. One of my new pullets (Her name is Nutmeg) has not only muffs on the side of her face, (like a normal EE) but she also has muffs on her head. Is this normal? Does anyone else's baby have anything like this? Does anyone know what it looks like when they are older? Picture below: they are longer than they look in the photo.

The "head muffs" are the really white tuffs in the picture!

My 2nd question is:
I bought a brooder bulb from my pet chicken (so i know it is for chicks and not something else) and boy it it HOT!!!!
I have always read that you are supposed to hang the bulb about 18-20" above the brooder, so the temp is like 95 but i have to hang mine 41" above it! The temp is 95 in there and the girls are okay, but there is not way i can raise it any higher to decease the temp by 5 weekly like you are supposed to.
Has anyone ever had this problem before???
Thanks y'all!!!

I'm not sure how to answer the first question as I've only raised quail. For the second, do you have any old non led light bulbs? you could use that. Me personally I normally use a 75-85 watt.

No, i don't ... but that is a good idea. Do the neon lights provide sufficent heat? What kind of quail do you raise? I want to try my hand at raising them.

Heat lamp bulbs range from 250W down to 75W or even 50Ws, and what your brooder needs depends on it's size and the ambient temps where it is.
Starting, the brooder should be about 95F at one end, and much lower at the other end. Much lower, not only 65F.
Your brooder may just be too small, and the heat lamp too strong, given what you are reporting. How about some pictures and dimensions of your brooder?
Lower watt bulbs are available for reptile housing, so at pet stores.

My brooder is quite large, i can easily fit inside it. I would post pics and dimensions but I am not near it right now...
I did do a ton of research before i got my chicks and did all the things you are saying. Half and half so to speak heat wise. I still don't understand why my bulb has to be raised so high to get the correct temp- it's only 100w. Thanks for the help Mary, i really appreciate it!

maybe you bought a super efficient bulb. I mean I would love to have a bulb that produced that much heat using only 100 watts. Sounds like you are getting enough heat to heat a shed which would normally take 10 times as much.
Sounds like a mystery.

Some bulbs seem to run hotter, or if the room the brooder in is more confined, it may be holding in a lot more heat.

100W shouldn't run THAT hot but you may want to drop to a 75W or even lower.

Possible she’s inherited extra full feathering on her neck, along with the muffs and beard. Many of my EEs have that, and the roosters look like they have lions’ manes when they raise their hackles.
