If you have a roo that is RIR and a hen that is Maran (known for the chocolate colored eggs) will the egg color remain dark or more red? Know what the chick would look like - unknown. Question is the egg color. Posted this on homesteadingtoday and thought I would ask you experts. I think the egg shell color is produced by the hen...I think...thanks

The egg color is produced by the hen so even if bred by a RIR Rooster, your Maran Hen will continue to lay her usual dark eggs. The egg color laid by the pullet chicks when they mature would be unknown or possibly a mixture of the two as in how they get olive eggers.
