Does DE get rid of lice or just prevent?

I just saw some eggs on my silkie SO bummed! I have some DE, do I use it? or do I need to use a chemical?

she has only been with my chicks. I assume I have to treat the chicks too. what about the hens? they're not with her, am I OK with just putting DE in their coop/run?

It is sold everywhere as "garden dust".

thank you and do i just put it in their run or actually put it ON the chickens? and is it OK for the chicks? are they old enough? they're 4 1/2 weeks and up.

I"d likely dust them carefully. You want to dust their rears, under the wings, back of the neck, etc. Repeat in 8-10 days.

Thanks! I just checked the chicks and I don't see anything on them. do you think I could just do the DE with them? they aren't really in close contact with the silkie as they don't sleep/roost together. I have them in separate sleeping places. I really don't know anything about the life cycle of lice and how they transfer etc. perhaps it would be pushing it not to treat everyone?
