Does grit sometimes have oster shells in?

Quote:
Who knows what grit may contain in the UK! Oyster shell is not the only source of Calcium Carbonate, the chemical needed by birds to build egg shells. Oysters are usually sold stripped out of their shells in the USA so a supply is usually available where they are packed, they are baked to kill off any germs and crushed for poultry use. I suppose other shells could be used but I am guessing. Real chalk (Like in the white cliffs of Dover) can also be used. ground Limestone will work. I suppose if the grit you got was sold for birds it is safe enough but may not provide enough Calcium for poultry or ducks who produce many more eggs per year than do cage birds.
I know one source that you are almost sure to have: Save the shells from the eggs you eat, heat them up to kill germs, crush them up and offer them to your birds. If the females gobble them up they aren't getting enough Calcium from their feed and grit. Remember they need grit to digest their food so continue to provide it to both sexes. Don't wory the males won't overdose on Calcium.

Could be, around here commercialy produced grit is just tiny gravel mostly Granite.
