does isolated hen need a laying box

I have a small "time out" cage for my feather-pecking RI Red - just starting using it to hopefully break the habbit and also protect my poor Easter Egger who is 1/2 plucked in the meantime. It's small as I said, so if I put one of our nesting boxes the space would be really little... if i place straw in the cage, can she lay her eggs in there? Or do I need to make sure she has laid an egg before I use it?

I would just put enough bedding in there so she can make a nest when she is ready.
