i bought an incubtor yesterday for the thrill of hatching the eggs myself. she laid two eggs on saturday and one was broken and they ate it and i took the other but it took her 3 days to lay another one. is it posible that it upsets her that i take her eggs, and maybe thats y she hasnt laid in the past 3 days? if so i dont want her to be upset, bc thats something shes worked on and i will give her eggs back to her. i dont have to use the incubator and i can let her go broody, but i dont know how safe her eggs are out there.

Maybe. But maybe not. I'm really not sure.

I know that when a hen is broody, she gets really mad if you touch her eggs!

Our BO hen is broody and she will growl and get all puffed up.

Mine didn't like it when they first started laying & some still try to hide them but they have gotten use to it now. I pay for the room & board so the eggs & meat are mine. They must like the deal because they free range & stay around.

I have one hen that has gone broody but I just lift her off the nest and remove the eggs, she does not get upset and she has stopped being puffy about it now.

I persist because I want to make sure she gets out and eats. She will get over it soon. As there is no rooster her eggs would not hatch anyway.

If you have a rooster and your girl wants to go broody then by all means let her go and leave the eggs under her, but otherwise you are missing out on the eggs and she is wasting her time.

just by the way, how old is your hen, and how long has she been laying. If she is young or has recently changed her home she may just not be into the laying routine yet, still getting used to things.

Depending on what breed she is she may not lay every day.

We need more information to advise you.

It took about a month for my hens to settle into the new surroundings and start laying more consistently. They get a little mad and try to peck at my hand when I reach in and get eggs, but I have no roosters so I agree with the poster that said they are just wasting their time being broody! LOL!

It might upset them for about 10seconds if that. Usually they are more upset about being moved off the nest if they are sitting on it than the eggs being taken. It won't upset them enough to stop laying. They likely won't even remember they were upset a minute or 2 later. Unless they are broody and then they'll try to kill you for taking their eggs, they'll refuse to get off the nest, and they won't lay any eggs. Doesn't sound like that's your problem. Most chickens don't lay an egg a day. It's more likely you'll get 2 eggs for every 3 days and much less if it's not one of the good laying breeds. 1 every 3 days may be the average for that hen.
