Does it take awhile for hens to become dependable layers?

We got our first egg last Thurs, again Fri & Sat....now nothing since then, this is Wed. Does it take awhile for them to get into a rhythm of laying every day or is something wrong? They're not acting like anything is wrong.

Thanks!

Yep, it sure does. Newly laying hens can be quite inconsistent in their laying at first. They get more regular with time.

Good question and good info. I am new at this and so far my RIR started last Sun, then Mon, nothing Tues, then yesterday I had what I suppose is considered a fart egg...smaller, soft, slimy with what looks like the inner membrane that would be covered in shell PLUS a regular egg (I am guessing it was hers too) and now nothing so far. One of my Araucana's laid on Sun also for the first time, then Tues morning, and nothing since.

I have to go grocery shopping today and am kind of hoping I will jinx myself by buying some eggs.
