Hi all

I'm brand new to chickens. I just got 4 rhode island red chicks this past week. I don't know how old they are, they were delivered to the local farm store in a big batch. they weigh about 2 ounces and are just starting to stretch their necks and in the last couple days have grown tail feathers (about 1/2 inch worth).

Yesterday I found one chick with her head turned almost upside down. She can't straighten it out. That sounds like the descriptions of wry neck or limber neck or whatever, but she also can't walk. She just flops around. She can't eat or drink on her own. If we dip her beak in water and tip her head back she swallows, but that's it. Mostly she lies around with her eyes closed.

I separated her from the others, who are fine, gave her some vitamin e and selenium (couldn't find pro-vi-sol) this morning, no effect yet. Also a teeny bit of yogurt.

Does this sound like wry neck? Are we prolonging her suffering? Should I just end it? It looks terrible.

Thank you for any advice.

Good news, after some poly-vi-sol (five stores in, I found it) with added selenium, pedialyte and now a little egg yolk, this morning she is on her feet! She is still not able to control her head well, but it is definitely better than yesterday.

I tried to follow the formula in that video, thank you. The poly-vi-sol says it has both vitamin e and thiamine in it. Really I'm just winging it (har har) but it seems to be helping.

Just to follow up! The chick is now running around, eating and drinking on her own (as of today) and is back in with the others though she is about half their size. Her neck is still a little wonky but she seems to be managing.

Here's what I did for future searchers:

a few drops in AM and PM of poly-vi-sol (has both vitamin E and thiamine in it, but I also crushed and added a selenium pill. probably around 5 mg per dose.)
fed water, yogurt and/or scrambled egg, about 3 times a day, but not much because she fought it like crazy

she also had an initial big dose (about 200mg) of vitamin E/selenium.
I gave her some pedialyte instead of water initially but then didn't bother to continue it because she was getting better.

So after about 3 days I'd say she's just about recovered.

I actually initially came here to find ways to put her down, because she looked SO TERRIBLE. but I'm very glad with the help of this site we managed to keep her!
