The one I think I'm going to buy has 1'' wire, but I will put hardware cloth over it. Will that be ok?

Mink an weasel can fit through 1” wire so yes use 1/2” hardware cloth over.

Just curious as to why you just don't use the hardware cloth instead of puttin it over the other wire?

The window comes with 1" wire and I don't know if I can take it off so I was just going to put hardware cloth on it.

I think, a double layer is great, since it is already there. Just that much more protection from a stronger predator like a determined racoon.
