Does my heat lamp need to be red?

Red lamp helps to prevent pecking and it is also easier on their eyes.

I use either green or blue for the ducks. They don't peck on each other, so that isn't an issue. The color is easier on their eyes.

Blue might be the best, but right after Christmas sometimes I can find the green exterior spot lights on the markdown table and if so, I buy all they have. I got 8 of them last year for 50 cents apiece. They had red ones, too, marked down to 50 cents.

I use the exterior spots because they won't break if a drop of water gets splashed on them.

I've used red and white, they both work. I had a red one someplace that went missing when we moved here a few years ago. I found a white one that the previous owner of this place had left in the barn and have used that one quite a bit.

I was at Tractor Supply the other day and they had a bunch of stuff on clearance. They had two-packs of white heat lamps for $1. I bought what was left and nabbed four bulbs for two dollars.

Another interesting thing I saw was a "Chick Starter Kit" in a box. It had a waterer, feeder, a couple pounds of chick starter, and maybe some other things in there. The normal price was $20 and they were on clearance sale for $5.
