Does Rain Blow Into Your Coop Ventilation?

We have decided to leave the eaves open for ventilation.

I attached temporary chicken wire with temporary staples just to see if this is the way we want to go.

The coop is not yet finished and chicks are still in a brooder cage.

We will be adding hardware cloth and maybe bug screen to try to minimize the wasps coming in.


Does anyone have a similar setup?

And does rain blow into your coop?


I am told the coop should be kept DRY, so it seems the rain blowing in would be an issue. (?)

I don't know what kind of winds you get in VA- but where I am, rain is not likely to blow into eaves like those. Sometimes in the winter we could get a nor'easter that could blow snow sideways or up into a space like that, but maybe you'd want to worry in hurricane force winds

It is not generally a problem (in warm weather with a very amply fresh-air coop it just plain don't matter, and for any other situation, usually you would design your ventilation to have enough overhang or shelter or whatever that it *doesn't* blow much rain in ways that matter), and if you discover that it *is* a problem for you, it's easily fixed.

For instance in your case it would be easily fixable by adding something along the rafter tail ends as a fascia board (normally you'd use a 1x4 or plywood strip but it looks to me like that would leave your plastic roofing ending *short of* the edge of the fascia board so you might consider using metal flashing instead, to block off the ends of the rafter tails) (edited to clarify -- but you're NOT likely to get any meaningful amount of rain blowing in that vent, as you have a good amount of overhang there)

You'll ultimately use hardwarecloth (and screws or battens or hammer-in staples or loooong airgun staples), yes, not chickenwire? Your wall doesnt look obviuosly climbable, but raccoons and possums can surprise you...

Your overhangs are so large, I cannot imagine rain being blown in.
