I want to know what other places require as far as backyard egg sales. We are scheduled to go before our Town Council on May 2nd to discuss the sale of eggs from a backyard stand. Do those of you who sell eggs this way have business licenses?
We've been selling eggs from a box fit into the window of my garage, with a slot into which people can drop their money for about a year. All of a suden, we were told that we have to have a business license and zoning permit. According to the town ordinance raising poultry and selling poultry products is permitted, so we aren't worried about the zonig permit, but we don't think we should have to have a business license for eggs.
How is this handled in other areas? We are in a coastal town in SC
Right now, we've posted a sign telling people that we cannot sell the eggs, but if they want some, they can leave a donation - that we understand if they don't want to purchase illegal eggs, but the chickens are still laying. Eggs are still being taken and money is being left in the money slot and people are supportive of our eggs and chickens. We hope a lot of them will attend the town council meeting and dicuss the issue, but we want some background information from others who sell eggs.
Thank you.

This is a matter of state and local ordinances, so unless someone who lives in your immediate community/town answers, none of our responses will have any bearing or importance, sorry. You did present as a business store front, be it ever so humble.

I sell completely by word of mouth and sell out. I could also pay a fee at local farmer's markets, but the fee is too high for my taste. Wishing you the best as you sort through this.

Thank you, both - that is what I am trying to find out - what various other areas require. I think we are going to request that "business" which make less than a certain amount (yet to be determined) be exempt from the requirement of having a business license - that would include a lot of locals who don't make a lot of money, but who do have small "businesses" - and thing slike kids selling lemonade and cutting grass.
I look forward to hearing from other locations.
