This chicken thing is tricky!!! I've owned them now for 8 months and it's really been one confusing thing after another.
Todays possible issue........So we go down to the coop tonight to collect the days eggs and we find 'Nugget' sitting in the one nesting box. At first I'm thinking that she's just being Broody (she's only 9 months old which I thought was a little early). We dont want any chicks so I start budging her around and she doesn't seem up to moving. I get a few eggs out from under her but feel some wetness. I pick her up and take her out of the box and there were 3 eggs and a broken one under here. I set her down to clean up and she's making noises that sound like a respiratory issue (but I've never heard a chicken with a cold). After cleaning up I put her back in the coop and she walked right back into that nesting box and lied own in it.
I was thinking egg bound but I have 5 hens and and got 5 eggs. Is it possible that she layed a broken egg???
This is just so confusing. If she has a cold do I HAVE to do anything about it??? Will he die if I dont? I know that nobody can answer for sure but just looking for some thoughts on possibilities as to why she might have opted to go right back into the box while sounding very 'airy' on her clucks. Just a weird couple days with the birds.
