Does this bird need to be put down?

I get that. But my wife is pushing to keep it alive. And it seems to be on the mend as well.
It's also a bit of an interesting thing to see.

Also I'm not actually spending any money on vet bills or anything like that.

I just moved her inside, cleaned the wound as best I could, and gave her a clean comfortable space food and water.

Already seems to be doing pretty well. And I plan to turn her back outside, once I don't think the other birds will open her back up.
Be careful, they may attack her due to loss of hierarchy......wherever she was on the totem pole may be gone.

It is a $3 bird, I mean, how much do you have invested in it? If you spend $100 on "fixin it'' and it dies, what have you accomplished? If it lives, great, if it doesn't, go buy another $3 replacement
I spent 250$ to give surgery to a 1$ mouse meant to be snake food.
She had breast cancer, spent a whole day on the phone to find a vet willing to do the job.
She had her surgery, lived 10 days before the cancer came back.
Will spend those 250$ again.

But you don't owe anybody an explanation or justification. If they wouldn't do it for their animal, that's fine. If you do choose to do so, that's nobody's business. Here at BYC, we're here to help, not to judge. ❤️

I agree with @BigBlueHen53, peroxide once is fine - after that you want the tissue to heal, so saline is best. I would keep her inside if that is possible. If not, then in a coop/run by herself to heal. If her wounds do not heal, and/or get worse (redness), I would start an antibiotic. If you do not have a vet, you can order from here without a script. I suggest amoxicillin:

I agree with stopping the peroxide. One of the things I use up front is a drawing agent of milk and bread poultice it draws the poisons and infection out. Then as the area heals I apply go old bag balm which keeps the area disinfected and moist and helps it heal faster. A lot of times if you think like your grandma did, they couldn’t run to the store or vet every five minutes so they used what they had I use the above treatment on a hen that a raccoon had ripped a hole in her back the size of a half dollar. She healed nicely and raise a few clutches of chicks. We do what we can to care for the animals in our charge. With a bull calf with scours I used gatoraid, keopectate and aspiran. Gave it oat meal in milk and brought it around and at 1500 pounds used it to bless the family. Don’t be afraid to care for your charges, it makes their lives better.
