Does this look like a BCM roo?

Eh- I got 3 hatchery girls so I can make pairs and sell off all the roos I've been hatching. They are kinda on the small side- but friendly. I might keep one of them just to see how their egg color is.

LOL! His legs are black. I've never had the marans before- so it's all new to me. Maybe somebody will trade me some blue copper girls for some ameraucanas......wishful thinking!

That amount of red on his chest wouldn't concern me what so ever, as you stated you are not using him for breeding, I bet he makes some pretty OE's. I like his comb!!

Well- he's either BCM x Ameraucana (Olive Egger) or BCM. Have you ever seen a welsummer roo at 5 weeks? They looks like mutts too- but they're not!

When birds are crossed they can show traits that look pure but way back in their genetics they have the other breeds genes. One never knows when crossing birds. I have several AM's x BCM's and AM's x Blue Coppers......several look like pure Marans and lay a dark egg as they got the single comb instead of the AM comb and no puffy cheeks, and some look like Marans with puffy cheeks, the others that got the AM comb also got puffy cheeks and look just like the AM mothers and lay an Olive egg.

As long as he's got that dark egg gene- I'm happy! Where did you get your blue coppers Pinkchick? Nobody has them around here!

I went in halves on an order of hatching eggs directly from Bev couple years ago with a friend of mine, the only ones to hatch were 2 splash roos....of course! Then I got a few birds from another friend of mine with pure Davis stock in that mix was 1 blue copper pullet a solid blue and 2 BCM's, I started with those. Then I got some hatching eggs from another friend of mine with pure Davis stock of which 16 birds hatched and out of those I have 5 that I kept for breeding, the rest were sold as layers and the roos for dinner. Out of the 5 from that batch I only use 2 BCM hens and the Blue Copper roo for breeding now. The original splash roos out of the order from Bev are now gone but I did keep one of the splash roos splash sons for future breeding. He throws nicely colored chicks when put over BCM hens. The rest of the Marans I have and am using for breeding now are new generations of the original birds that I have bred, they of course are blue coppers and splash....my favorites. Out of many many many hatches from last year and this year I have only kept 7 birds to grow out and for potential breeding but now that 7 has been reduced down to 3, it's a slow process but very worth it. I also just received 12 BCM chicks from Green Fire Farms from Davis birds so that I can add them to the breeding pen. I am not thrilled with the egg color of my blue x blue matings or splash x splash matings or splash x blue matings from this year, so I am thinking that I am only going to make the blue coppers from Blue Copper x Black Copper or Copper Splash x Black Copper and hoping that will rectify the egg color loss.

He does look like A BCM roo. Mine looked like that around that age. I'm going to be doing what you are doing also. I'm crossing him on my EE hens when he grows up to get some olive eggers in my flock
