Does this look normal??

While out with the chickens tonight, we noticed one of the girls walking funny... Austin started freakin out sayin MOM SHE'S GONNA LAY AN EGG.. I didnt believe him but.. yup.. she did LOL.. she just looked at it like um....

This was 'maybe' her 2nd egg LOL

So, the issues is the shell was squishy (for lack of a better term LOL) is that normal???

eggs looks healthy and fertile. Give your hens free choice oyster shells and the egg shells will become quite hard.

By it being her second egg, its normal to have a shell-less egg or one with a weak shell. It takes some time for all her "gears" to get in line.

Yep, the egg looks delicious.
Have your girls just started laying? Are they on layer feed yet? Your girls will need more calcium, so putting out a separate dish of oyster shell to peck at will go a long way to making the shells harder. They will eat it if they want/need to.

Yep.. they comets (jenny the comet is the one that layed the egg!) just started within the last day or so....

I leave oyster shell for my layers free choice at all times. They eat from very little to none. One bag has lasted for a year at least and is still half full. It is not expensive so i keep it just in case they want it. I believe most layer rations have enough calcium so they dont require any additional

Told the DH lastnight, we ARE getting oyster shell so they have it IF they need/want it LOL.. Men... he's a city boy and chickens are a new thing for him.. he does like them and loves to help clean the coop.. now, if I could just get him to help with house work!!!

I had one last week drop one just like your right in front of me. The other girls had already gone into the coop for the night, but once it broke they all came running out. I know that you don't want your girls to get the taste of raw eggs because they will start eating their own (sometimes). You should have seen me yelling at my DH to get the girls back to bed and I was standing on the broken egg so they could not get to it. They were all picking at my flip flops and toes. Now it is funny, but at the time, I was freaking out.

Yes, it's normal. And don't freak out if you get another one. I had 3 soft shelled eggs in a row. My BR laid one while I was holding her. (she was acting strange and I was checking her out) After that, she laid perfect shelled eggs.
