so I recently bought some goat grain for my pregnant goat and 5 month old goat. I'm new to goat grain and have never used it before, so I was wondering if this goat grain looks fresh and okay for my goats:

Oops pic didn't load, here it is:)

Looks OK to me. But what does your goat think? That is what is important. Smell the feed. See that it doesn't smell musty or moldy.

Thanks-:) yes I I'd an dit smelled fresh to me... Not that I much know what goat feed smells like but it smelled fine so I have some to my goats and they loved it, which I'm happy about so thanks!

I think a more important thing to find out would be the nutritional content and overall diet. Have a picture of the tag from the bag?

Yep, I agree to check the tag for nutrition content. I'm sure many of the members here would be more than happy to help you understand nutrition labels (it sometimes is difficult for me to understand them as well!)

The only issue I can see from that picture is it looks like it might be a sweet feed, which is not always the best for animals. In male goats, sweet feed can contribute to urinary blockages. We fed it for years to our goats when I was a kid and never had issues, but now that I am older (and sometimes wiser) I don't think I would choose to feed it to any future animals.

I have 6 goats. 2 of my does are prego again. Yay! Just love me some kids! As mentioned above, the ingredients are extremely important. Goats will eat almost, and I stress almost, anything. My grain is green pellets. Similar to rabbit food,if you would. The labels will specify all medications manufactured into the bag. As well as any other ingredients. The medicated grain is so good for them. As it keeps them healthy inside and out. As well as giving them their annual vaccines. And your choice of hay, alfalfa, etc. And then of course plenty of greens! And this is where the pickiness comes in. Goats are browsers, not grazers. Mine will tear up some gums! Bark(skin) and all!! But will not touch ragweed. Yuck they say! Lol. I do so love my babies!!! Can send pic of my label if that might be of help to you? God Bless sweetheart.

I had to re read that to make sure of what it said, lol. We actually don't want to feed medicated feed all the time. It's not a good idea. To start with it becomes ineffective after constant use. (Just like with people and medicine) Second, the animal never builds up a natural immunity to whatever the medicine is combating. (usually coccidiosis) Thirdly, you can't feed it to milkers if you plan to drink the milk. That's just some of the reasons. I'm sure there are others.
