its illegal in my state... dont know about other states.

rabies regulation varies from state to state. Some state all rabies HAVE to be given by a vet. Some states, you can buy it and do it yourself. I give rabies myself.

I don't know if it is legal or not... but seems to me that it wouldn't be available for sale to anyone other than a vet if it was illegal. Eh?

I have a hard time understanding or not getting frustrated when I read certain posts mentioning that chickens are animals, just animals. What does that mean? Of course, animals are animals but humans are just humans as well. We are what we are. Why does one have to be more important or above the other? I simply can't understand this callous opinion.

Well, if you must know how I feel exactly. Humans are animals too. The worst animals. Pests really. If I was mauled by a dog or raccon and clinging to life... I hope someone puts me down. And, like I said, I am totally against animal cruelty. You know who does cruelty to animals? Humans.

So, to answer your question, "chickens are animals" means (the way I said it) that they are not above the laws of nature and life. You live, you die. Chickens live, chickens die. You do what you can when you can, but (as the poster stated) you don't get online and write about it while your chicken is suffering. You act. If it can be treated, treat it. If it can't... put the animal out of it's misery. Don't waste time typing about how sad you are until it is taken care of.

At least, that is how I took the original post.

Well I am sure the problem with the rabies vaccine is a simple one....you can order anything that does not make it legal to use necessarily. If so, there would not be such a problem with illegal steroids for example.

Most states require a vet to administer rabies vaccines and to determine which type and bath of vaccine and to monitor it as a 1 year, 3 year etc etc. which also goes along with licensing the dogs.

In most states (I know Washington, California, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky, and Georgia) a vet is required to give it to dogs and cats horses are another thing altogether and you can order horse rabies serum online all day and night. Most people purchase a 4 in 1 or the 7 booster and think they are vaccinating for rabies when in fact they are not. Best way to know is check with your state vet's office.

Cindiloohoo:

In order to bring my dogs, chickens and ducks into the state of Kentucky I had to have: dogs: a health certificate, current rabies and other vaccinations by a vet with vaccination certificate. For the birds, a health certificate and certificate of pollurum, typhroid and influenza clear labs were required. Kentucky also separates livestock from poultry. The statute is entitled "Kentucky CHAPTER 257 LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY AND DISEASE CONTROL"

Livestock is KRS 257.10 - 257.315
Poultry KRS 257.330 to 257.350

Here is Illinois law

"Rabies Vaccination

The owner of any dog six months of age or older must have his or her dog vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian. This vaccination prevents the spread of rabies and protects the dog and the public.

Dog Licenses

The owner of any dog six months of age or older must have a license for his or her dog. Licenses expire on April 30th of each year. Animals should wear license tags at all times, so that they may be identified."

Specifics for the Illinois Code

"Official health certificate" means a legible record, made on an official form of the state
of origin, or the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, and issued by a licensed veterinarian of the state of origin, a veterinarian in
the employ of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or a veterinarian in the
employ of the United States Armed Services, which shows that the dog(s) listed thereon
meet the health requirements of the State of Illinois. The official health certificate shall
contain the name and address of the consignor; the name and address of the consignee; an

and shall also indicate the health status of the dog(s), including the date(s) of
vaccination(s), type of vaccine, name of manufacturer, serial number, and amount of
vaccine administered.

"Officially vaccinated" means the inoculation of a dog with a vaccine as set forth in 8 Ill.
Adm. Code 30.90 of these rules; administered by a licensed veterinarian by the route and
in the amount recommended by the producer of the vaccine and for which a county rabies
