Does this make me cold hearted and evil?

scbatz33, I'm a lavender orpington-er as well.

Love those orps. Lavs, blue, buffs, love em all!

I know they are awesome. Of all the breeds I RESEARCHED before I got any chicken, I kept coming back to the orpington. They are just beautiful birds.

Are you cold hearted? In my opinion, Yes you are as well as sadly jaded and cynical. However, that is my personal opinion that does not mean I am correct, I am correct only in that it applies to my personal set of standards, beliefs and thoughts.

The day you wake up and cannot find a smile over the beauty and bounty to Creator gave you to enjoy and a shed a tear or feel something when some of that beauty is lost, that is the day you have strolled into jaded and cynical. Not everyone view their birds as you do, many don't and for that I am thankful. The fact you can chuckle at someone else's distress over the loss of a pet is offensive, disturbing and down right disgusting. Not everyone has the heart to dispatch a bird and not many have the ability to know when to do so and when not too, especially those new to chickens. Any human that finds it easy to kill an animal and feel nothing is someone I can do without in my life. I am a bowhunter, I kill animals, and NOT ONCE have I ever not felt something and NOT ONCE have I killed an animal for food without thanking it. Animals deserve respect, especially when you take the responsibility for their care.

Remember that you are not in the 1700s or earlier when animals fended for themselves with little interference from humans, you are in a time when animals require and depend on human interaction, supply and care. They are no longer bred to depend on themselves hence the word domestication. If you take the responsibility to have animals, you take responsibility for their care and proper disposal that does not mean a trash bag and garbage. In many areas, that is a crime punishable by fine and/or jail. There is a reason for that.

Just as you can be punished by fine and/or jail for shooting a dog rather than taking it to a vet to be put down humanely, the same goes for your responsible care of poultry. Which by law, in most states, is NOT livestock but poultry.

I, personally, find your disposal method depicable and think you should not have the privilege of keeping chickens but that is my personal opinion. But, if you can sleep well at night and look yourself in the mirror daily and feel nothing....carry on, just do not be shocked if very few others agree with you.

I am new to this whole chicken raising. Actually, I rescued a chicken that escaped the processing plant truck. Does that make me crazy??..No it does not. It is called compassion for animals.

Could you elaborate on this statement?? I know where we live livestock is just that, livestock and that includes poultry. Which states exclude poultry from their definition of livestock??

Makes perfect sense to me. Everything you have said does. Unfortunately, yours is a life lesson that people don't learn anymore. As a people, we have become so far removed from the realities of the food chain, that we have the luxury of being able to get attached to animals. I don't think you are evil or cold hearted. I think you are grounded and practical. Your priorities are focused on the people in your life. Your values are sound. I totally understand where you were coming from, but I don't think you are going to convince everyone here. Take heart and be who you are, cause you are a blessing to many in your life.

I always enjoy your posts!

Many states have laws regarding keeping livestock, farm animals and poultry, defining them individually and separately. The laws can be different for livestock than they are for poultry. forgot your other portion... Oregon is one example.

Thank you. That clarified it well.

This is the first post on this thread, that actually made me mad. Most of those others on here that disagreed with me, as most of you did, did so respectably, despite the obviousness that you were upset with me. So lets break this down.

So you state it is only your opinion, then go on to tell me I shouldn't own chickens? Your opinion should be enough to dictate what others should be allowed to do?

This quote shows how little you know me. I smile over God's beauty everyday, and if, God Forbid, I was to the point I couldn't, I would want to be put out of my misery. Just the morning I was smiling at the lilacs in bloom, and the peas coming up, and my strawberries blooming. I was admiring my beautiful blue orp, and chuckling over how cute my black cochin hens are. Last night I went fishing, and admired the tranquility of the creek, the muskrats I watched swimmng in it, and the various waterfowl I saw. I also admired the catfish I caught to eat. I love taking photos of nature, I love everything about nature. But, I love watching a hawk swoop down to feast on a rabbit as much as I love watching a robin feed her young.

Now, this, offends me. My chickens are cared for just as well as anyone elses on here unless you consider proper care regular vet check ups and diapers! My chickens cosntantly have fresh food and water, are treated (by me) for treatable illnesses, and are immediately and humanely put down when they injury/illiness is uncurable. They have good shelter (three coops) a huge run, and are allowed to freerange on days I am home in the evening. They share their free-range time with my dog, when he's out, they're in, when he's in, they're out. I care for them, breed selectively for best traits, and cull as needed. I raise them for eggs, and for meat. Please don't tell me my chickens are not properly cared for, because that simply is NOT TRUE.

Whoa...wait...what?? We're talking about a dead chicken here. It's no longer alive. Does it matter if the worms feast on it my backyard or a dump? If I buried them here in the yard the dog would dig them up (don't ask how I know this if you dont want to know). I figure it's better to have them at a dump, then to have my dog munching on rotting carcasses, dont you? Now, to me, what bothers me immensely, is human cremation. My husband wants that, and I sure ain't come to terms with it. Now, isnt it much worse to burn a humans remains than toss a chickens in a trash can?

I sleep very well, too well most times, lol. I love looking at myself in the mirror knowing I am a strong, self reliant woman that needs not depend on others (except my husband, whom I depend on dearly) to have a healthy and wholesome life. I feel great that I grow (or catch) about 1/2 of my own food now, and that I am living a life on the land that most only dream of. I know my chickens and other critters are well tended for. Why wouldn't I sleep well?
