for me, the line of division is clear... Livestock is eventual food, pets have names and are treated as members of the family (although not elevated to human level)... I had a number of chickens over the years, and the only one that was the pet was Einstein the wonder chicken. He wasn't named einstein because he was brilliant, sort of the opposite. But he'd sit on my shoulder, make sure to extend himself beyond me so I wouldn't get poo'd on, and had a funny sort of sound he made at my dogs. A cross between a growl and a bark. whenever i was outside, he was there. Kind of ironic for a roo to bond with another guy huh? He may have been deranged but he was funny.
Oh, did I mention he was one of the ones that lived in a big pile with the barn cats? Wouldn't eat chicken feed normally, but would stand at the door begging to be let in whenever he smelled fried chicken on the stove, or would love moist cat food.
