I stepped into the coop to clean this morning and my Buff Orpington was in there all by herself - rooting around the nest boxes!!! She made a terrific mess, ripping up paper towels, tossing pine shavings all over the place, and was "talking" the whole time. No eggs, but when I went back in she was still in the coop and seemed a bit agitated. I pet her and I THINK SHE SQUATTED - kind of lowered her backside when I pet her and didn't try to get away like she usually does.

Could we be getting close to eggs??????

Yes, you should see an egg within 24 hours. They get very agitated the first time. It's a new experience and they don't quite know what's going on. Keep an eye on her to make sure everything comes out okay.

Wow! Within 24 hours?

We're going away for Thanksgiving and everyone has been teasing us that the girls will probably start laying while we're gone, so this is very good news!

I went in and cleaned up the coop and she immediately came back in and messed up the area next to the nesting box again. She's following me around constantly and seems kind of needy. I will watch her closely. Poor sweet thing.

Here's a picture of my Penny the day she laid her first egg. She was very upset and spent most of the time tucked under my arm pit. No egg all day and then after i put her to bed, i went out to do a last check on everyone and a shell-less egg had fallen out of her butt.

My 7 month old Silky hen has been doing that for about a month now. Seemed to really be starved for affection or something. But she has been laying eggs for longer than that. She has, however, becoem broody over the past couple of days. Unfortunatley, we don't have a rooster right now so her broody efforts are all for nothing.

She is still following me around and squatting...but actually doesn't seem as agitated today as she was yesterday. Sigh. That's what I get for counting my eggs before they're hatched...

bawkbawkbawk I hope you get eggs soon! My silkie girls are 20 weeks old and I'm already anxious for eggs.

One has a really big comb. They all started to get red in the combs at about 17 weeks old. I'm excited.
