Well I went to my TSC again today and it was a little better. However they had yellow chicks in the red sex-link pullet brooder, no ducks, and about 20 rabbits in one of those waterers. All I could see was a sea of white and red eyes.
One feed store I went to last week had one chick that had its' eye pecked out. Glad they had someone there with a heart. She pulled that one and a friend.. I asked her if she had chickens, she said no, these were her first two. One's a boy and One's a girl. I said how do you know... Well to my disbelief, she grabbed the one with the bad eye (already enough trama) and held it upside down by its' legs. And gave a story about how males would just hang there while females would try to pull up.. OMG.
If the feed store doesn't get separate specific breeds, I don't blame them for not knowing what they are or how to sex them.
I'm learning and still can't identify them all at TSC. To me, a yellow duckling looks kind of like a yellow duckling. Unless the hatchery sends a list with the box and says this is what is in the box and this color is this and what not, all they know is they have a box of mixed ducklings. Give them a break for not being experts on every breed of duck and chick that shows up for a few weeks a year. If they aren't caring for them well, kindly make some suggestions to an employee or seek out the manager or owner.
I know the TSCs near us take care of the ducks pretty well as each store seems to have an employee that has adopted them all and make sure they are as clean as ducklings can be in a bin. I haven't been to the 2 feed stores yet this year... hmm, maybe I'll do that today...
