Doesn't quite look like vent prolapse but something is coming out of my hen :(

She was acting quiet this afternoon and standing alone then we noticed this hanging out of her. It looks like tubular skin. I may have seen yellow like yolk so I'm worried an egg broke inside her.

It looks like a weird egg with a tail, seen occasionally from hens on this forum. It can occur if an egg is being laid and it gets stuck, from what I have read. Hopefully, it is just a blip in the egg making apparatus.

How is she doing now?

To me, that looks like a soft shell egg or membrane. You mention that you thought you saw yellow like yolk - was that inside the membrane or did you see that leaking from the vent (as if the membrane broke inside her)?

IF that is still hanging out - then I would gather her up and gently pull to see if it will come out - if not then she may need further care with a good soaking in a warm epsom salts bath to see if that helps get it moving.
Have you seen her able to poop?

A lot of times the membrane comes out intact and breaks when it hits the ground or when flockmates pull at the membrane - most all I've had came out with the "help" of other hens pulling at it.

If she is acting normal, then I would just watch her for a couple of days. It won't hurt to give her extra calcium (1 TUMS or 1/2 Caltrate daily for 2-3 days). I usually direct dose with poultry vitamins as well.

IF she is lethargic, then let us know - she may have more in there, has an egg stuck and what you are seeing is a "tail" (basically membrane that is on the end of a "normal" hard shelled egg. If the yolk leaked into the oviduct, then she likely won't feel too good for a couple of days either - yolk is a good medium for bacterial growth, so...an antibiotic may be in order - a lot depends on what you see and how she is acting.

Thank you for replying. She got herself into the coop; she was quiet but was able to move around. Truth be told, I didn't see her eat or drink but we let them free-range around 3 and they'd already been in the run all day. I think you're right about egg membrane. I looked it up and found a pic that looks just like it. I'll be more proactive tomorrow and try to pull it out. She was born last spring and I'm not even sure she's laid yet. There are 4 hens in our flock her age and some of them are laying small eggs, just not sure who. Do they not flap around when put them in water? I always wonder how they seem so calm lol.

She more than likely passed that - but if possible, you may want to go check now - she needs to be able to poop and I would hate for that to be blocking her vent.

What do you feed your pullets? Do you provide oyster shell free choice?

As for flapping around in water - it depends LOL Some birds are a bit more docile than others, but generally they do seem to like a good soaking. Just remember if you do need to soak her and your temperatures are cold, dry her very well before she goes back out - use a hair dryer if you need to.

I'm going out to check now. I hope she passed it! I feed them layer feed since they started laying.
