Ok folks...changing food is the first step. Dogs are carnivores so feeding a high quality, MEATY food is the first step to good health. But, remember, dog food is heat processed so a lot of the nutrition is actually cooked right out of it. So, you have to use a good supplement that provides stuff like enzymes, probiotics and the vitamins and minerals that get obliterated in heating like E, C, etc.

I use Dinovite supplement along with a homemade diet. I used to feed Blue Buffalo Wilderness and Taste of the Wild dog foods which worked well with this supplement. I now make a super easy food. I am going to put a link to the video that shows how to make an easy homemade diet. But if you don't want to do that, you can just find a meaty food and add a good supplement. I recommend Dinovite because I have used it for 2 years and it transformed my dog.

After switching foods a number of times, which works for a short time because you fill in some nutrition gaps but create others, I have finally actually SOLVED the problem! No more so called allergies, itchy skin and stinky skin. And believe it or not, no more shedding!

Think about it. What would your skin and hair be like if you ate a dry kibble, cooked food every single day for years?

Here's the link: http://www.dinovite.com/blog/2011/08/dinovites-homemade-raw-diet/

I haven't had a chance to read through all the posts, so I apologize if this has been mentioned already, but the two ingredients that my german shepherd cannot tolerate are barley and flaxseed. If either of these ingredients are in her food her ears just blow up... become red, inflamed, yeasty, and make her miserable. Almost every non grain free dog food now contains barley; I suspect because it has become a cheaper filler than corn. Even the foods that are marketed as xxx and rice contain barley if you read the ingredients. So to get away from the barley, you can try a grain free product, BUT, most all of those have added flaxseed. The only commercially prepared kibble I have found at the moment that is working for us is Merrick Before Grain.

Just sharing in case this can help anyone else that is going through this. Most times the vets will keep dispensing medicines and never mention that the (somewhat) simple fix is a diet change. And I believe that the barley intolerance issue is a fairly new development and not well known of.

ok FOLKS!!!

Update!!

The food from the vets fell threw. The vet did not think it would help as they believe it's from environmental issues. So I'm ignoring them and the meds for now...I am putting him on the RAW diet for the next few months to see how this will work. If it works great and the majoirty of his skin and other issues go away-I'm going to totally stick to it. If in 6-8 weeks nothing has changed..he goes straight for allergy testing. In the mean time, my husband is picking up new wooden flooring and replacing all carpets in house ( this was getting done but not until Spring-we upped the date to see if it helps him)

I will take photos of him starting off and his skin so you can see what Im dealing with. I will update weekly so you can hopefully see his changes...I can't wait to start this.

Im not sure if the BYC member wants me to announce that they are helping me ( for privacy issues) so for now I can say A great person is giving/helping me all info on the raw diet-sending the vitamins and minerals I need to start him up!!

Thank you!!
I didnt want to go through all the hassle of cooking him a totally seperate meal but I'm done holding onto the tiny bit of convenience of bagged food...We had a cow butcherd and I have 40 lbs of very lean hamburger meat in my freezer that I can start using:)

thank you all for the help and encouragement!!!

Good for you. You will see a huge change in your dog. "Allergies" are normally just a symptom of a weakened immune system due to deficiencies of specific and required nutrients...that are heat processed right out of dog food.

The video I sent a link to shows an easy way to make a raw diet. And, it's actually cheaper than commercial dog food. And you only have to make it about once a month and freeze it in portions for your dog. WOrks great.

It sounds like you are already moving in that direction. Your dog will be so happy that you did! Keep us posted!

I would make sure to educate yourself as much as possible on raw. I wouldn't advise getting info from just one person alone. I use a prey model diet consisting of meat, vitamins, and fish oil. Some people add vitamins and/or veggies, others do not. Some follow THE BARF DIET created by Dr. Ian Billinghurst, others slightly cook their meat. It is good to educate yourself on all your options so that you can feel confident that you are doing what is right for your dog. This Yahoo group http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/ is very informational and where I have gained the most knowledge. There are thousands of posts about dogs with allergies and info on raw to help you. Good luck to you and I hope your puppy feels better soon.

I fed my cats raw before I switched to the grain free dry/wet food. I just couldn't do it on top of everything else (4 kids--2 are autistic, dh who works long hours, etc) I just ground up whole chickens in a meat grinder with some kelp powder and some other veggies--greens, and pumpkin I think. I got the recipe from a yahoo group, I think it was called rawpaws or something. There was another raw feeding group that was extremely rude and close-minded and you could not say anything the mods didn't like or they would delete your posts and ask you to leave the group if you disagreed with them. Even if you were asking questions! So if you join one and find it's like that, just leave the group and find another.

Too many nice people in the world to listen to meanies! I sprinkled some bonito flakes on top b/c my other cat was picky and wouldn't eat it otherwise. But I believe dogs need a lot more/different veggies than cats. Cats need barely any, but they do need some for their gut flora and for the fiber. Dogs, like people, can actually digest more and gain more nutrients from vegetables, cats can't digest them at all. Cats are true carnivores, dogs are actually more like mostly meat eating omnivores. Wolves will eat greens and berries in the wild, it's not like feeding a dog veggies is unnatural. I didn't add any supplements. I know some people add vitamins and fish oils, but I fed my cats fish once in a while when I found whole fresh fish for sale. I'm sure there are many sources for recipes out there and if you have a big dog, it will probably be much much easier to do a raw diet since you won't have to grind everything and dogs can eat meat that is slightly less fresh (cats need their meat even fresher than people do! They're extremely sensitive. Dogs are much less sensitive, less than people are to spoiled meat.) I couldn't buy clearance meats for my cats b/c they were too close to the sell-by date, those are fine for dogs. My cat also still eats plenty of rodents that she catches and probably birds as well (though I pretend not!) She barely eats any processed food.

Cats are great that way. She's extremely healthy, so I don't feel bad for not sticking with the raw. I couldn't let her be sick all the time, though.

Well my peeps..Mr. Noah is going back to vets today...My poor baby is a mess. I woke this am to find him curled up on couch and wouldn't come to me when I called him..Mind you this is a dog FULL of energy and will go out 100 times if I asked him too-so when he didnt respond I knew something was wrong..So I stood there and called his name and said "Buddy..what's wrong?" and went to cuddle him-He's lethargic-sad looking and I picked him up to put him down. He couldn't walk to me..front legs just kind of limp..would not put pressure down on front right leg..So I picked him up and took him outside to get him to at least piddle...He did and then proceeded to lay right down on the ground..looking at me with his pathetic little eyes..I picked him right up and brought him in on couch...He hasn't eaten or drank -THAT is sign #2 that something seriously wrong with him. I had switched him over to a raw diet only for a few days and I don't think that has anything to do with it but maybe??? He is my big eater and drinker..

I called the emergency # for the vets since it was 5 this am when this went down and no one could see him until 11:30 today...not normal business hours but they are coming in to Xray him and figure other things out AGAIN!...I am at a loss

This time my Dh is coming with me because now HE is very concerned about his buddy...He said he has had enough and told the vet to allergy test him when we get there-depending on what the doc finds-she wants to do some blood work to make sure its not something serious first...before spending the 700$+ on allergy testing-that is not sitting well..but nice enough to warn us not to spend the $ if something is seriously wrong with him to where he may have to be put down..NOT TODAY but waiting on blood test results first...Just pray its not serious like cancer-or organ failure etc....thats all that keeps going threw my mind right now....

Never in a million years did I think I'd be going through this with my chubby wubby nooner-poony ( his nick name) dont ask -we're dorks!

I know in a pm, you had told me some things you were going to use to start raw and I expressed concern. I'm worried hat if you went ahead with what you mentioned, you may have given his a tummy upset or pancreatitus. Ground beef isn't the best thing to start them on. I hope it goes okay, and he feels better soon.

Well lets hope it is not that...

I hope he ate something funky..I did see some socks that were chewed beyond recognition yesterday? Terd muffin loves to get into our sock baskets!
