Bakground info: I live on a lake and have just recently finished fencing (within the last few weeks) my fence goes all the way down to the lake. It does not have a fence in front of the lake as I did not wish to ruin the view from my house.

Mistake!

Neighbor up the road had his two newish dogs escape. My neighbor calls me right after lunch, there is dogs killing my birds! So with his help he stayed and kept the dogs at bay until i could get there - i rushed from work. So now I am taking time off of work to nurse birds and deal with the situation. IN THE POURING RAIN!

That irresponsible owner let his untrained dogs run lose and they worked their way around the fence at the lake shore and had a field day with my birds.

The oldest of my hatches this year is dead. She/he was just getting to the really curious stage and was probably attacked first. Another of my laying chickens is dead. 3 more chickens are injured with puncture wounds and in my infirmary. (garage) a 5 week old turkey starting to recover from dry fowl pox has had his wing tip broken.

I have attempted to mend everyone up. Here's hoping they pull through

I talked to the owner in the most calm manner I could - if i see those dogs again they are going to the pound/animal control. After that he won't see them again. He seemed to be cooperative but we'll see. I spent months fencing so that I could free range!

my sister in law used black chain link, you had to look for it to see it in front of the lake. i'm prety sure if it wer me, the neighbors dogs would not make it to the pound IF there was a next time. They WILL TRY to come back.

There are always going to be irresponsible dog owners and bad neighbors. If not them, then wildlife. Yes, even in the middle of the day. Bottom line, if you're going to keep poultry, you must keep them confined to keep them safe. True free range poultry is a fallacy made up in childrens books and by starry-eyed dreamers. It does not exist in the real world, not for long anyway. As for the dogs, use the SSS method.

Oh I am well aware of that. I did not start ranging them full time until I had the fence completed (or what I thought was completed). I shall continue the fortification until it is satisfactory.

Sorry you got hit.We have no hope of free range with our dogs raccoon skunk coyote and a hawk that circles all day. I have an enclosed raised run for my turkey and last week my hen had some blood on her talon and feathers underneath. I guess the fencing floor was not enough and one strand of electric fence didn't cover it so I went nuts running wire all over the bottom of the run. It may be solar but as my wife found out the hard way it works well
