Dog Attack, Broken Back or Wings?

Sorry, I got distracted. After reading the suggestions to put the poor girl down I decided to put some mashed up boiled eggs next to her and check on her in the morning to see if she was getting better, and if not I was going to put her down. The egg was gone in the morning and so far she has eaten three total, has been drinking water, is able to stand with her head up for short periods, but is still pretty lethargic and sleeps with her head on the ground. It looks like she has a broken wing, but judging by her behavior I would say her back/neck is likely sprained not broken.

That is good news. I really hope that you continue to see improvement. Keep us updated and good luck.
 
The dilemma is that chickens are not good at expressing their pain. I have watched one of my hens get one toe stuck in the hardware wire of a coop and hang upsidedown from her one toe without so much as a peep. Fortunately she was fine once I untangled her little toe, but she MUST have been in great pain with her toe twisted and stuck the way it was and all her weight dangling from one toe. So although your hen is eating and showing some signs of life, she may still be suffering. On the other hand, I have had chickens come back from dog attacks (playful attacks, like yours). But my hens were never quite as broken-looking as yours--they were just a little raw on their backs. I am sorry for your difficult decision. If she were mine and didn't show significant signs of improvement over the next day or two, I would assume she is suffering and I would end it for her. :(

no once the shock has gone off she is eating, drinking holding the head up then give her a few days she will recover and broken wing is not huge nor meaning death
