Rest in Peace 1963-2021
So, one hell of a morning around here...
So, 7 mo puppy (Casca who is now pushing 80 lbs) starts going nuts about 6 am. He was whining, yipping, scratching at his crate and just being unruly. So, I stagger out of bed and let him out of his crate, never looking outside. I was under the inpression that his bladder was full and he had to go outside. So, I get his leash hooked up and little taco bell beast starts whining. So, I let the little 10 lb heathen out of his crate. I always let Blue go out on his own first so the puppy does not accidentially step on him bouncing and playing.
Blue bolts out the door as I am stepping outside with puppy...suddenly Blue goes nuts and charges across the deck and the puppy is going nuts pulling, growling, trying to run....So I look up and there are two dogs, a great dane and a huge brown dog, being bitten on the lower legs by the 10 lb terror near the chicken coop and run.
I fought Casca back inside, calling Blue the whole time and grab the pistol that I keep loaded for foxes and such. I bolt out the door call Blue, who is ignoring me and charging these two dogs, biting their ankles and acting as if he is 110 lb. So, I yell at the dogs which are running towards me trying to get Blue off them, Casca is inside the house trying to come through windows to get outside and one of the dogs turned quickly on Blue. Blue is running around trying to keep hound of him and moving towards me as is the hound thing after him and in a second I knew I could not get to him without going through the great dane and possibly getting bit by this hound thing...so I shot it.
You can imagine the scene...me yelling for the ChicCi to come back, hound trying to catch him to tear him to shreds, my chickens raising all sorts of holy hell, puppy in the house trying to break windows, husband standing there trying to figure out why puppy is inside with his leash dangling, fighting to get outside and I am outside yelling. Blue chased the Dane away and never left the yard, the Dane went home.
I went over the check the dog and make sure it was dead, if not, I would have shot it again. I will not have any animal suffering in front of me. It was dead. Then I went to the coop where my girls and one roo were raising hell. The door looked like a bear had tried to get inside. Everyone laughed at me for building a flipping fortress like coop...well my girls are safe and the dogs did not get inside. I will have to reinforce the door or replace it just to make sure it holds if assaulted again. I will also now have to reinforce the digging prevention around the run because they dug in a good size place trying to get in, tearing up the chicken wire buried our and away from it and given another hour they could have gotten inside the run. I built it that way to keep all the fox, coons, mountain lions and other critters who like chicken....out.
I read here on constantly about dog's attacking flocks...owners who are too stupid to own a dog saying "oh he was being a dog" and fools in animal control not doing JACK. Well, I will not have it on my property. It is the one place that is mine to do with as I choose, no one tells me what does and does not happen here and no one's dog waltzes over here and tries to get at my chickens, attack my little dog or make me even think it will bite me. I will not have it!
So, I am saddened by the killing of a dog because I hate to kill anything but I am totally ticked off at the dog's owner(s). I am so absolutely sick of irresponsible dog owners who think as long as they feed, water, take it to a vet and love it, they are being good owners. darn it, it's your responsibility to keep your dog(s) at home, train them, teach them some freaking manners and protect them from themselves. The dogs were doing what is "natural" for them. So, I now have to go down the street to inform the neighbors that I have killed one of their dogs on my property and explain what happened. Will I take any bullsheet from them? No Am I going to offer my sympathies? Yes Will I offer compensation? No Was I within my rights? Yes Can I make them pay for damages to the coop? Yes Will I? No, I can find another door at a yard sale.
Idiots....I am sick of idiots owning animals.
