If it were me I would get rid of the dead dog and not say anything, what dog? I will keep my eye out for it, good luck finding your dog.

Sorry but too many people will never admit to their dog being the problem... me I have a problem dog, if someone has to shoot it because it gets out well I would be sad not mad.... maybe mad at myself.. good luck.

I'm so glad it wasn't one of your dogs-when I first read about you letting your little one out I was afraid it would be him. Glad your coop withstood the attack!!!

I have to say after reading all the confrontations and bad feelings that have happened when someone has to tell the dog's owner what happened, I'd 'SSS' the dog too.

Sure they'll wonder what happened to their dog - but if you let your dog run loose then that's the chance you take - that one day it just won't come home because it's been run over by a car, run away, got trapped and can't get loose somewhere, got mowed over by someone on a tractor who didn't see the dog behind them (which almost happened to my neighbor's yappy little annoying dog today while I was mowing my lawn) or *gasp* shot by a property owner protecting their own pets or property...

Why open yourself up to the insanity these dog owners may bring down on you - threats, insults, calling the police, animal control, bad mouthing you for being a dog killer to all the other neighbors, etc?

I'm glad none of your pets were harmed during all this. It is sad when people are not responsible with their pets

Too bad you were put in the position to have to harm the dog.
Wishing you quiet times

I had a friend who used to let her two labs run. She figured they lived in the country, so what the heck. It used to drive me crazy. One day they didn't come back. She had been told that the dogs were running some sheep, and the farmer shot them. She was really mad. I told her, it was within their rights to shoot your dogs. They did what dogs do, behaved like pack animals. If you didn't want them shot, you shouldn't have let them run. She didn't like that opinion, but really was a good person, so she learned from that situation. She has never let a dog run loose since. Still, she might be a rare individual.

I hope that the dog owner in your situation will be as willing to learn. What's the chances that they will figure out what happened if you don't tell them?
