Good for you - I have 3 big dogs in a pack running our neighborhood. We go to bed with a flashlight and gun parked next to the back door. They've been out by our coop at night twice, and once one of them growled at me, in MY backyard!!!

And what exactly does SSS stand for? Shout Shoot and Shoot some more? :p

Always sad when an animals dies but yes it happens and yes it could have been alot worse! Atleast you wont have to worry about that dog anymore!

If it has a collar on--cut if off and throw it out. Then call animal control, tell them you had a "stray" that was attacking your chickens--you had to shoot--can they come get it. Then you'll be legally covered for shooting the dog, and the "stray" will be disposed of.

You know you did what was right. You have to deal with what life sends you. Think of it as a predator, not a pet. When you shot it, it was a predator.

Speckledhen...of course I would be on your side and I would bring both beasties and the 9mm. Heck I might even bring DH with the AK-47 if it is too badly out numbered for us

I personally could not do the SSS. I was raised to believe that you take responsibility for your actions no matter what they are and no matter to reprecussions and punishments.

I went down to chat with the neighbor. He was very nice and understanding HOWEVER the absolutle idiot he is married to needs to be muzzled!

I told him what happened and about the coop door and damage to the run. He immediately told me to repair it and bring his the bill. He suspected something was amiss because he heard the shot and a minute later the Dane came running home alone...apparently they had left their gate open last night and he let the dogs out and did not know the gate was open until too late. I told him that was not necessary but to please please keep the dane at home because I do not want the situation repeated and the dog now knows where my birds are. He took his dog to bury in the backyard. Then the wicked witch of Southeastern Oregon comes out and starts her nonsense.

She explained to me that there was NO way her dog was on my property much less after my chickens and that she was going to sue me AND have me arrested for animal cruelty.

I counted to 10 and explained that I was very aware of the law in Oregon regarding dogs at large, on private property and being a nuisance...wounded, killing injuring or otherwise screwing around with livestock, domesticated fowl or pets. and the last time I check the property at 2599 was MINE not hers. And in any event, there was no way the dog somehow managed to come to my property, invade my home through a locked and deadbolted door, find and grab with his paws my loaded, safety on and in a holster 9mm, remove the safety, pull the slide back, point the gun just behind his right shoulder and commit suicide while I somehow sleeping in my bed, dreamed that I shot a dog who was owned by a complete nitwit! Only to wake up and release the poor thing had committed suicide in my yard with my gun. Now of course the dog could have been left paw dominant and laid on his back and somehow committed the horrible act but I seriously doubt it.

The last of that being stated in a rather sarcastic, unpleasant near growl. I wanted to grab her by the neck, shake her till her eyes bugged out and scream "YOU ARE AN IDIOT!" But, her husband walked up and told her to stop it that stupid dog was obviously there because I shot it and brought it back to them. I told him again how sorry I was and told her I would see her in Court when she sues me.

I mean come on now. That makes 2 dogs I have killed in the last year...one was a repeat visitor that tried to bite me when I went to chase him off and now this. Sheesh I think it is time to move deeper into the mountains because I am just weary of dealing with stupidity and dingbats.

LOL! You're funny. Sounds like the husband has a handle on it, and witchy won't be making real on any of her threats.

FWIW I think you did the right thing. Hard but truthful. Also drives the point home to make sure the gate is closed and locked.

Yeah I am truly not concerned about being arrested or sued. If it will make her happy, I am retired now she can waste her time away from work for the court appearances...whatever floats her boat.
