Dog attack...dog dead. update Pg 4

I'm glad you decided to talk to the owners instead of just pretending like nothing happened!!

It disturbs me to read about SSS. Not ALL pet owners whose pets escape are "stupid" or "negligent." Sometimes awful accidents occur & that doesn't mean someone should be torn up never knowing what happened to their pet, if that can be avoided. You just don't know... so don't assume

Plus... what if your neighbors don't KNOW you have chickens? How are they going to learn from an experience if you just shoot their dog & never say a word, you know? How will that benefit anyone or "teach a lesson"?

Unfortunately I'm one of those owners who has a Border Collie who sometimes takes a run if she gets loose. She's never gone more than 10 minutes, but I worry that she's going to go onto someone's property and get shot.

I'll accept it if it happens but I also hope that if it happens, that someone will be kind enough to let me know so that I'm not out looking for her. We don't have any close neighbors and live in the mountains. Its rare that she gets loose (twice in a year) and she usually just runs in the 35 acres of woods but ....well...if it happens, I hope someone does like Cetawin did, and let me know.

I started doing some research about State Statutes covering dogs, and livestock a few years ago, and found that many states actually have separate statutes making it illegal to remove a dog's collar (I know, I have been tempted many times to do this and take them over a big Mountain Pass to Idaho and cut them loose) Not only is doing this illegal, it would crumble the legal standings that already protect the rights of the landowner... Pretty particular stuff, eh? Who knew?

Will never happen... there are no laws to support her lawsuit. My guess is that she is blowing off emotional steam. If she does, just refer her to the State Statutes regarding dogs running at large, dogs attacking livestock, dangerous dogs and whatnot... offer to counter-sue for costs, damages, legal fees, and, if you're feeling particularly cheeky, the bullet.

Hats off to you for your proper reaction, and honesty.

I admire that you did what you did with honor. I don't believe in SSS. You did what you had to do and then had the integrity to stand behind what you did rather than hide.

You sound like a really wonderful person. Someone that I would be proud to have as a friend.

My female (spayed, of course) Pit Bull is the same way. When the chicks were in the house, she would RUN and check on them if they started peeping too loudly, and sometimes she'd push the wire back off the top of their brooder just to sit and watch them (Pit Bulls were actually bred as "babysitters," and she takes her job seriously - :lol).

The chicks were in their coop for the second night last night, and DH said he heard Pooch hit the doggie door raising holy heck about 3x in the middle of the night, so she must have heard something outside and was worried about "her" babies, which is probably why she was completely passed out on the couch when I woke up this morning!

Well, of course. You often jump out of bed from a dead sleep, grab a gun and run down the street to go dog-hunting.

PERFECT! Tell her to take a hike to the cops and waste her own time! You know you were within your rights. Sometimes you just have to walk away and concede that you just don't get the darn persons because they are WRONG!

To whomever suggested cutting off the collar -- don't EVER tamper with evidence. It'll only bite you in the butt at the end of the day!

Cetawin -- I hope you DOCUMENTED everything. That's the way to protect yourself -- document, document, document! Take photos of the damage -- photos of the dead dog -- photos of anything relevant. WRITE DOWN conversations as soon as they happen. Call animal control and report the incident, whether they will do anything or not. Make sure there's a paper trail and a photo trail, just in case. This lady is unlikely to actually go through with her threats, but it's better to be prepared!

Sounds to me like you did very well, and had a lot of control with wife... not sure I could of or maybe would of but good for you...
