Dog attack - Ellie dislocated toe - me, broken bones UPDATE

Omg, I hope your chicken is ok, and I am so sorry about your injury. First the Animal Control officer was in the wrong, as well as the dog owner. I would contact a lawyer because the dog owner is responsible for your medical bills as well as any vet bills. Second, I would get a gun and shoot the dog if it comes onto your property again and starts after your chicken. I am a dog lover and would rather not kill a dog unless absolutely nessasary, but this one is way too dangerous, and if animal conrtol won't do anything about it, then it is up to you...After all you have the legal right to kill it if it is on your property and is a danger to you and/ or your livestock. I have no doubts it will be back again to play with it's new favorite chew toy....which happens to be your pet chicken. Also you do need to call the police and fill out an incident report.

If this was an on-the-job injury from an usafe condition that was created by bad practices there would be no hesitation in getting a laywer. Why would a situation like this be any different?

And I think that I would include animal control in the action too. A public servant has no business offering opinions. If you were bit the dog should be at a vet's office in quarentene (sp) under observation for rabies but it depends on the laws of your state. If the laws are that the dog should be observed by a vet I would raise cain till the AC officers that responded were jobless.

jj you must be in shock, someone's dog bit you! the officer HAS to talk to you and make a real report (i would have been stomping on his hood) call them back and ask why didn't the officer speak you or follow you to the hosipital . it's a dog attack on a person not just a chicken.

I am so so sorry and I hope Ellie recovers and your heal quickly as well. As to this...

i am upset from animal control's smiling arrival, saying it's just a dog's instinct and that some people don't consider chickens pets anyway and later, a phone message from the dog owner saying sorry this happened but it's risky for me to have put my hand near a dog's mouth when it has prey (sounds like animal control told her i was bit - wait till they learn it was multiple fractures...).

whew okay now in "non bannable english"...

I do not give two flying flips what the dog's nature is...the dog is not yours and should not be on your property PERIOD. The dog bit...the dog need to be put down PERIOD. Sad to say...it is obviously the owner's fault. The dog should be better cared for and safely contained at HIS home.

As to the owner's ridiculous statement...AGAIN the dog should have been at it's own home not at yours attacking your pets and you. as to being bit...enlighten to them to the upcoming medical expenses and possible surgery for broken bones from being PLOWED DOWN by their dog...not from a bite. Does this mutt have current vaccinations?

Then call a lawyer...get a copy of the animal control report and sue to have the dog put down and the owner held financially responsible. Sue BOTH of them. The owner for vet and medical bills and so forth and the County animal control and the officer for negligence and wanton disregard for human safety or whatever your jurisdiction calls it.

Sorry but that was the wrong way to handle the situation by both animal control and idiot dog owner. I would sock it to them.

just a quick note re: impressions about the dog biting: it all happened so fast (and yet somehow seemed an enternity). the injury that is most clear to me is the fractures - i was (and am)reeling in pain so was not aware of lesser injuries. that, and was just worried about ellie, needing to find her, help her. i still don't know where exactly the blood came from it was such mayhem, so i don't know if the dog's teeth actually caused any open skin bleeding or whether the fall and the struggle with the dog did -

when i approached the cop and summarized in a phrase what had happened he said nothing in response.

you are all such a comfort - thank you for your understanding about how much a sweet bird matters and means.

jj

p.s. i don't own a gun here in densely populated nj!

Good add cop's name to the lawsuit too. the worthless lazy toe rag.

Edit to add: They are lucky it was you and not me...I would have killed the dog and put it out by my dumpster for animal control to pick up. I am not playing with a dog attacking me, my animals, my kids or even twitching like it will. You called animal control I would have loaded the rifle.

The dog needs to be put down, animal control's an idiot, and the cop's just dumb. Call the police tomorrow, insist an officer come and take your statement, and then get an injury lawyer. This was a dog attack, you were injured, and it's not your fault. Then sue for medical and vet bills, you had a witness to the attack, nice and simple. Ask for copies of the xrays and hospital and vet reports, and explain why, more importantly remind them what would happen if it's a child that's attacked next as the dog "acts like a dog".
