Dog Attack/Lone Hen

Awww! Sweet girl! She was having fun outside in the sunshine and dirt - a good day for her!

As the weather warms, hopefully you may be able to source some started pullets in your area. While craigslist isn't always ideal, keep an eye out on listings. Ask around at your feed store. If they have a community bulletin board, take a look at that and see if anyone has pullets for sale.

Having older birds to introduce her to may be a good idea. If you find any, ask the seller questions - where the birds came from, have they had any illnesses, etc.

Raising your own chicks from the feed store (like from TSC) or through a hatchery, you do lessen the risk of bringing in diseases, so it is something to consider. Depending on how large your coop is, you might think about sectioning off part of it and raise chicks directly in the coop with a brooder plate, this way your Gal can see the chicks as they grow up.

There are so many ways to do this, I'm sure you'll find that right solution that fits your schedule and coop/run set up.

You are welcome! I'm happy to listen if nothing else.
Please keep me posted on how things are going.

So she's still doing awesome, still an office chicken because we haven't got their run up to standard yet (I want it to be bullet proof 🤣). Appetite is back, she does make a... I don't know how to describe it, growl? Almost like a broody sound? Every now and then, out of nowhere. Not sure what it means but it doesn't sound happy! Not sure if she's missing friends or wants to go back to the coop maybe? Other than that she eats, drinks, we go outside after work together, she's content in the area I closed off for her. She sits, pecks the feed, preens, she even jumps on top of her kennel to sleep somewhere high at night. Only thing that concerns me is her growling but I'm working on making their run and coop safe as fast as I can. I've been telling her she's getting sassy lately! 🤣

Edit to add that she has not laid any eggs, which is to be expected i assume. She never really was much of a layer anyway.

I'm glad to hear she's doing o.k.!
Sounds like she's being spoiled a bit too;)

Hens make all kinds of noises, so I'm not sure what the growl might be.
Can you get a video of her making the noise so we can have a listen?

For video, upload to youtube and provide a link.

That should work! So she replied with this sound when I started talking to her, usually she does something like this a lot louder and a lot angrier sounding. It took me awhile to catch her making this noise because it happens out of the blue!

I don't think it's a growl, it's more like a greeting. I have a few hens that make a similar noise and really ramp it up if I'm coming with the treat bowl, so your Gal may be thinking it's time to get a goody or hoping anyway.

Listen to this one!! I'm not working today so she's in my office by herself, I came upstairs to spend some time with her and sat on the floor. She's talkative today! Caught her making the noise for a minute and a half straight, she's still doing it as I type this. What do you think it means?

🤣 She's letting you have it.

My roosters do that when something has drawn their attention and they need to give a slight warning. Could be a Butterfly, bee, wild bird or even a Hawk. I think she's just sitting in her spot and warning you that she doesn't want to be disturbed. I've seen and heard similar to this from broody hens as well.

I could totally have it wrong though. I'd like @centrarchid to chime in with his observations. He been studying chickens for a lifetime and knows more about sounds, behaviors and chickens than I could ever hope to.

She really is isn't she! 🤣

I'd love more info on this, never seen it before in my other hens or from her, but it does sound like a broody chicken!
