Dog Attack on Banty Roo

A dog caught my banty Roo (I had him out to give my girls a "break"). I thought for sure he was dead but he made his way back to the Coop. I've not let him in for fear of the others pecking his injuries- He has a red, raw area where the dog chewed on him and ripped out feathers along his back. He doesn't look well. I feel so awful for him!!! I've laid out some food and vitamin water for him, but he's pretty sedate and is hiding as best he can. What should I do for him???

you maybe should put water on where the dog chewed on him, And if it was your dog keep your dog away from him and if it was a neighbors i would tell them what thier dog did and how bad the dog hurt him.

First, I would check him all over to find all his wounds. If there's dirt or nasty gunk on them, you can gently dab it out with a warm, damp cloth. Then, put antibiotic ointment on his wounds; I do this two to three times a day to keep the wounds moist, thus preventing bad bacteria from getting trapped under the scabs.. Once you've done this, put him in a calm, quiet area away from things/ critters that will scare him. He will be in shock for the first day or so and probably will not eat that day. I'd also give him Duramycin (an antibiotic drink mix) and keep him on it for the full 7 day requirement. I usually have my sick/injured birds drink one cup a day and then they can have plain water for the rest of the day As long as you give him the proper care, he will probably make it. Chickens are a lot tougher than we think! Hope this helps!!

Yes, put him someplace safe with access to food and water and clean his wounds. Antibiotic ointment is recommended above, I use a pro duct called vetericyn and I love it- it heals wounds very quickly. He will also need a top coat of something like blue kote to keep flies from laying eggs in his wounds and to reduce the likelihood that the chickens will want to peck at it.

Thank you!! He has perked up now but I hadn't thought to use the antibiotic ointment so I hope it's not too late. I've got him in a smaller coop by himself, which he's not happy about, but he is by his girls. I was afriad of them pecking him! Can I find the Duramycin or vetericyn at the feed store or Tractor Supply?

The duramycin should be available at both places, I'd hope the vetericyn is too but I know Tractor Supply traditionally carries it. Be prepared- it's usually around $35-40 a bottle but you can use it on everything! Just wanted to give you a head's up in case it's out of your budget so you can have a back up product in mind.
