Dog attack - possible shock

My banty rooster jumped into the yard with my dog. It did not end well for the rooster. He’s had quite a few feathers plucked and has a bite on his wing. I cleaned him up and doctored him with vetericyn. I now have him inside in a pet carrier with some water. I’m pretty sure he’s in shock. Should I wrap him in a towel to keep him warm?

Poor little guy!

Yes, I would keep him relatively warm 75-80, but he needs to be able to move to get cooler if he needs to.

When you can, get some better photos of his wounds.

Sounds like you are treating the wounds well. If you need to, reflush with saline, warm soapy water, chlorhexidine, then put on your Vetericyn.

Trying to keep him hydrated would be good too. See if he will take some sips of sugar water, electrolytes or just plain water.

Unfortunately, he didn’t make it. He passed a couple hours later. I was fairly surprised because his external injuries just didn’t look that bad. So I really suspect internal injuries.

I’m so sorry. Dogs are notorious for internal injuries and unfortunately you can’t even see then.

It’s okay. I suppose it is just part of owning chickens! Can’t blame the dog, the rooster jumped into his yard. I should’ve clipped a wing to keep him from escaping out of the chicken run.
