Dog attack

@21hens , another factor is that the tip of your finger is a tiny area, compared to any large wound.
Recently a coworker lost the end (larger tip) of his finger, and after surgery, used the honey on it daily, and it healed faster than expected. It was an impressive wound at first too, and had only a partial repair possible.

Look for Hibiclens (chlorhexidene) $10 at Walmart in the first aid aisle. It is the same as nolvason and is the most common used disinfectant in hospitals today. It mixes with water for use. You can also make a solution of it to use as a spray. Vetericyn Wound Spray is also good to use instead. Clean the wound twice a day and apply plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a day to keep the wound covered and moist. The most dangerous thing is to watch for any leakage of air from the wounds which could be a leaking air sac. Also the dog could have crushed with teeth to cause puncture wounds on the opposite side of the body, or internal injuries. Keep her separated in a wire dog crate and away from flies. If no flies, you can keep the crate inside the coop with the others, possibly after a couple of days of observation. Encourage her to eat soft foods such as wet chicken feed, cooked egg, tuna, or canned cat food. Offer water often with a scoop or cup held up to beak until she is drinking well. Check for a bad odor, or pus from the wound after the first day.

You're getting a lot of good advice here so keep going! Boy, this is a terrible thing to have happen & I am sorry that she's had to go thru it. Poor dear must have been very frightened. I am sure that she is feeling safe & in good hands with you watching over her inside. She looks to be a Barred Rock, which is my personal fav breed, so I'm pulling for her!

I read another poster say that however the dog got into the chicken area needs to be addressed. Not to put too fine a point on it but if the dog came back once, it will come back again in all likelihood, especially if there is a chance of finding prey. Family to us, prey to them.

We already know what the dog can do. Question is what are you going to do about that? Lots of folks advocate going to their neighbors to make them aware/ask them to keep their animals on their property and/or calling the authorities & pursuing those channels. Other folks say dig a hole, shoot the dog, end the problem.

Do what you think best for your situation, be it a), b) or c) something else entirely. You want some tips, PM me. My girls are family, too & in case of threat to their life, health or well being, let's just say "ain't no one linkin' arms & singing kumbaYah".
