dog bite

Welcome to BYC. How deep is the bite? Is there fat, muscle, or bone showing? Apply pressure to any bleeding site. Are you in the US or elsewhere, since products available may differ? Saline is very good to use on wounds. Initially I would use a disinfectant such as Vetericyn spray, betadine or chlorhexidene mixed with water, or soap and water if not too deep. A kitchen spraying faucet can be helpful with dirty wounds. After drying the wound, apply plain Neosporin antibiotic ointment twice daily. Can you post any pictures of the wound? Hopefully there are no hidden puncture wounds, and she was not squeezed too hard.look her skin over for anything you might have missed initially.

Is she awake and alert, and able to stand? If she is in shock, place her in a warm dim and quiet area. Offer sips of water when she is awake enough. Sorry this has happened and I hope she recovers.

Thanks for your quick reply. She is awake and alert and standing (in isolation). The wound appears to be only skin seep, but the skin is ripped open. Nor much bleeding at all, and really pretty clean since it was done on our porch and I intervened before the dog could leave the porch. We sprayed the cut areas ( all on her back where the dog grabbed here)with "Dr. Naylor's Blu-Kote veterinary antiseptic spray". Turned everything purple so now it's hard to see how bad things are. And yes we are in the US, Colorado to be exact.

I would clean it with hydrogen peroxide then use pomades that used to speed up the healing progress and close up the wound with some bandage.
Always works

let’s see if we can get pictures please. If you could clear away feathers around the wound-use scissors. Being able to see the wound wound be so helpful

We just cleaned the wound with diluted hydrogen peroxide and sprayed again with that blu-kote stuff, so I am going to leave her be for awhile. Next cleaning I will try for pictures

@mikehjkl can you post some photos of the wounds and your hen?
Is she eating/drinking o.k.?
No lethargy?
Moving around pretty well?

I would not use peroxide to clean a wound. Flush/rinse with warm soapy water, saline, betadine or chlorhexidine. Apply ointment or antiseptic of choice (triple antibiotic ointment, BluKote, Vetericyn, etc.)

IF the wounds are minor, you cleaned her up and applied BluKote, that will probably be o.k.
Watch for signs of infection - lethargy, foul odor, pus, etc.

She needs rest. If I could suggest something to please not use hydrogen peroxide for now. If she’s got tissue that’s trying to granulate and heal the peroxide disturbs that process. I personally like betadine. And it would be good if before you apply the next treatment of blue kote to take the photo’s then put on the kote. Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the new pictures. Best wishes

The skin is open an inch or more in two places (both side of the back where the dog grabbed her). She seems alert, standing, walking, sitting and eating. I think she is drinking, but not sure. So far no pus or foul odor.
And thanks for your interest and suggestions. I am new to this forum and so far I like it very much.
