Dog Breeds...

DadandJB, introduce her when they are little! If the chicks are in a safe cage, take her in when you feed them. That way, she's learning when the chickens aren't spazing out in her face. We had a Border Collie mix (we baby-sat my sisters) that was always there when they were little because I made her come with me when I fed them. I never had a problem with her AND she would chase anything that moved-turkeys, lizards, birds, etc. Even now, my sister says when she walks her by the pond near their house, she ignores the ducks (we had some) and chases the cranes. Just don't give her the chance to chase them, so keep them in a cage when she's around.

I have an Australian Shepherd and she is the best dog I've ever owned. She is super smart, so very easy to train and very willing to please. I think that's the most standout thing to me is how far they are willing to go to make you happy. That being said, I've also met some really dumb, quirky and neurotic Aussies. I would stay away from the miniatures and toys, they seem to be the most neurotic. It all depends on breeding, so if at all possible try to take a look at the parents or talk to someone who has a dog from the breeder. Also, don't forget that the time spent on training is so important. You can teach any dog not to chase chickens, it just depends on how much time you are willing to devote to that training. Good luck finding the perfect dog for you!

And keep in mind that some dogs are bred for show, and some for work. Personally, I prefer mixes. They tend to have less health issues, have better temperament, and you can find them for a lot cheaper! I know someone who said the stray mutts that wondered onto their doorsteps were the smart ones that didn't eat their chickens. The purebreds that they actually spent money on were idiots that got hit by cars or ate poultry. Not all are like that, but now-a-days everyone wants to breed for looks and show, so the dogs aren't always very bright. Working dogs like Aussies, Border Collies, English Shepherds, etc., are less likely to have health problems and are more likely to be smart.

Darkwings, Koopa is beautiful!

Border collies are working dogs, used for rounding up sheep. They therefore do have a tendency to try to round up other animals or indeed children. They are super intelligent and very high energy. If they are bored they can be destructive. What about a Labrador. They are faithful, forgiving and have a soft mouth. They are bred to stand steady at the sound of a gun, and retrieve game. Wonderful with children and in my experience other animals. Do however go to a reputable breeder and look at hip scores. They can if too interbred develop arthritis. Don't neglect the mongrel though, I have had wonderful crossbreeds from the dogs home. Good luck with your search.
