Dog chewed through the brooder

Sigh, I have lost so many birds (not just chickens) to cats and dogs in my life. It is just natural. That was my number one requirement with our chicken coop and brooder... It must be animal proof. It really is the only way to be sure nature does not take it's course.

I thought since the brooder was made out of old doors it was fine but she must have gotten a piece off and kept attacking it. Sadly I was not home or I would have known she was out there doing something naughty but my Hubby was watching kids and chickens~ Guess I should be glad that the kids are ok

Anyway She is showing us our week spots, which I guess is good if we watch her so she doesn't hurt the chickens. Big chickens haven't had an incident since the first day~ Where again she showed us a week spot (called two boys and the door) and ripped two with her teeth.

I have a beagle who is a proven chicken killer. We had a tractor style coop and one wall was made of sheet metal which she ripped through like a pc of paper. She killed three of my birds! Since then we have changed the coop to be more secure and won't allow the chickens to free range unless the dogs are locked in the house, or someone is there to supervise.

I know how hard it can be to loose birds, but some dogs are just instinctual hunters... there is no training my dog. She behaves perfectly when I'm around, but as soon as I'm out of sight, she's pure hunter...

You are not alone, many of us have lost birds to our lovely dogs.
